TALLERICO BERTHA H. Of Grove City, PA, formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on Saturday evening, February 1, 2014. She was 87. She was born November 14, 1926, in New Alexandria, PA, to Joseph G. and Mae M. (Osborne) Hollis. She graduated from Waynesburg College in 1949 with a Bachelor's degree. She and her husband, John Tallerico, Jr., were married in 1947 while they were students at Waynesburg. Mrs. Tallerico taught English, German, and Latin for about ten years in junior and senior high schools in Homeville (Munhall) and Brentwood, PA. She later taught preschool at the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years until she retired. She loved working with all of her students, and was always pleased to hear of their successes in later life. She touched many lives with her creative activities, from making baby quilts for family and friends, to tatting lace garters for brides-to-be. She also enjoyed quilting, leather-working, and watercolor painting, among other artistic pursuits. As a Girl Scout leader, she enjoyed teaching arts and crafts of all sorts to the girls, as well as leading them on camping trips and other adventures. Her signature hand-made stationery, Knots 'n' Notes, was much sought after, and she frequently received post-cards and thank-you notes from complete strangers remarking on the intricacy and originality of her work. She was an avid reader and collector of bells and thimbles. For many years, she participated in various church groups and functions, both in Pittsburgh and Grove City. After her own mother died, she continued the tradition of making cinnamon buns for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three sisters, Mary H. Rager, Betty L. Hollis, and Lorraine H. Kerfoot. Survivors include her daughters, Betty L. Tallerico of Grove City and Marsha C. Tallerico of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Sally (Bernard) Kerfoot of Cleveland, OH and Olive (Charles) Pauza of California; a brother, Samuel (Donna) Hollis of Kernersville, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014 at JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 301 Curry Hollow Road, Pleasant Hills, where a service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb
