SPERO JOEL ALAN, M.D. PASSED A...

SPERO JOEL ALAN, M.D. Passed away on April 19, 2014, at age 73, after a battle with cancer. Joel was born in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh and attended Peabody High School. He spent the majority of his life in the city. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with Phi Beta Kappa honors and completed medical school at Georgetown University. He also did additional medical training at Case Western Reserve University and Stanford University. Joel had a long and remarkable career in clinical medicine, specializing in Hematology. He developed a nationally-recognized knowledge of blood clotting and was named as one of the Best Doctors in America on numerous occasions. The early part of his career was spent at the Central Blood Bank in Pittsburgh and he concluded his career at Allegheny General Hospital in the Hematology/Oncology division. He was instrumental in the training of many current hematologists in and around the city of Pittsburgh. Joel retired in the Spring of 2010 to care for his wife, Janet A. Amico, M.D., who had been diagnosed with cancer. She lived for an additional three years and they were able to spend every day together. Joel will be greatly missed by his patients, friends, colleagues, and family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Pearl Spero; and his wife of 33 years. He is survived by his son, Jonathan A. Spero, presently of Atlanta, Georgia. Joel enjoyed traveling with his family, Pittsburgh sports teams, live theater and spending time with his two dogs, Soci and Jimmy, spanning a 28 year period. He took frequent trips to New York throughout his life to see shows on Broadway. Despite his rigorous work schedule, he always found time to spend with his family and enjoyed watching his son play tennis for both Shady Side Academy and Carnegie Mellon. He had many fond memories from Pittsburgh Steeler games, which he, his wife, and son attended together for 16 years. Friends will be received at JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Ave. at Devonshire St., Pittsburgh, PA on Thursday, April 24, 2014, from 6 to 8 p.m. Private interment in Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, 1 North Linden St., Duquesne, PA 15110 and/or the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania, 6620 Hamilton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
