CLARKSON RUSSELL, Jr. Age 83, of Point Breeze, the son of the late Bertha Hill Clarkson and Russell Clarkson, passed away peacefully at Schenley Gardens on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014, after a seven year noble battle with dementia. He remained surrounded by his faithful and loving family. Russ was a hard working man, committed to his vision of creating a successful business. He founded a company in the steel industry in 1971, at a time when Pittsburgh's steel industry was in decline. As was typical with Russ, his quiet and persistent approach prevailed and he was successful in his goal in this difficult environment, which is a true testament to his hard work, courage, and vision. Russ graduated from Shady Side Academy and Allegheny College where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During the Korean War, Russell was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany as an Army medic. After serving his country, Russ returned to his hometown, working his entire career in the Pittsburgh steel industry, starting in Homestead with the American Shear Knife Company until he founded AMO Industries Inc., located in the West End in 1971. Russ was engaged in the Pittsburgh community as an active member of the University Club, Pittsburgh Athletic Association, and Longue Vue Club. He was also a member of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Russell enjoyed health and fitness and participated in golf, squash, upland bird hunting, and skeet shooting. He also enjoyed and supported the arts, attending the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and River City Brass Band for many years. The happiest years of Russ' life were spent on his farm, working and cultivating the land, creating a place to find peace and calm amongst the rolling green hills. It provided him and all who visited a profound appreciation for the beauty of nature and our place in this world. He is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Staley Clarkson, of 51 years; his loved daughter, Christina Clarkson Gentilcore (Edward) of Pittsburgh; son, Andrew Ream Clarkson (Devi Ana) of Pittsburgh; his cherished grandsons, Griffith, Clayton, and Cameron Gentilcore; his sisters, Ruth Brown of Virginia, Mary Roth of Pittsburgh; nieces and a nephew. Russ spent the final years of his life at Schenley Gardens. His family is forever grateful for the attention, love and support they provided Russ, taking care of him and keeping him safe and comfortable, as they would have. The family is also grateful for the help and assistance provided by Bethany Hospice who was kind in every way possible. Friends will be received on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m. at JOHN A FREYVOGEL SONS, INC., 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street, www.freyvogelfuneralhome.com.
