SUCCOP RUTH Age 94, died peacefully at home after a long and productive life. Predeceased by her parents, F. Harry and Bertha Succop, Ruth leaves beloved Pittsburgh cousins, Paul L. (Dorothy) Reiber, Tom (Kaye) Reiber and Paul (Cynthia) Liefeld, amongst other cherished cousins across the country. Ruth was godmother to Allison Liefeld (Jeff) Fillar, which contributed to a lifelong profound respect across generations. Miss Succop graduated from the Pennsylvania College for Women (now Chatham University) in 1941 and earned her MSW from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University). After a brief career in New York City as a social worker, Ruth was recruited back to Pittsburgh to establish the Department of Clinical Social Work at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. After a 32-year career at Children's, Ruth created a charitable trust to provide the staff with continuing education and training. The trust continues indefinitely with the Children's Department of Clinical Social Work celebrating its 20th annual seminar in 2014, which remains open to its staff and the tri-state's social service community. Janet Fogle, current supervisor of Children's Department of Clinical Social Work, stated that Ruth recently recounted that she had made two wonderful choices in her life that contributed to her happiness. The first was returning to Pittsburgh and starting the social work department and the second was moving to Longwood at Oakmont. Both she and her extended family are extremely grateful for the friendships she treasured and the care she received. A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the Chapel at Longwood, Verona, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests that donations be made to the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation or to Chatham University.
