RILEY JOHN FRANCIS BIRD Age 84, on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, of Whitehall, formerly of Carrick, after a courageous battle with heart disease. John was born on March 6, 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA, the middle child of the late George and Eleanor (Wunderlich) Riley. John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Jean (Jonocco) Riley; three children, Dennis of Brentwood, Mark (Rachel) of Upper St. Clair, and Nancy Riley (Frank) Offenbacher of Douglasville, GA. John is also survived by his four grandchildren, who were the light of his life, Connor and Lexie Riley and Ethan and Erika Offenbacher; also survived by his sister, Barbara Eleanor Collins. John suspended his high school education to enlist in the U.S. Navy, serving from April 8, 1946 - February 4, 1948 as a Radio Operator and received the World War II Victory Medal. He completed his education and graduated from St. Mary of the Mount in Mt. Washington in 1949. Upon graduation, John joined the Air Force Reserves and served from October 15, 1950 - August 22, 1952 and received the Korean Service Medal. John spent his professional career at Duquesne Light Company where he worked for 38 years, retiring in 1991. He worked as Line Crew Leader/Pole Top. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday from 6-8 p.m. and Monday from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:45.
