FENNER MILTON MARION, Jr. Age 99, of Sewickley, died on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at home with family at his side. He was born in Norfolk, VA to Milton M. Fenner II and Margueretta W. Fenner. He went by several nicknames including Milt, Milty, Bunny, Jedge and his favorite, Grandbunny. Mr. Fenner was raised in Fredonia, NY. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, worked summers in a radiator factory, and in 1931 graduated second in his class from Fredonia High School. A member of Psi Upsilon fraternity, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan. He also attended two years of law school at Harvard University. In 1939 Mr. Fenner began work at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Dunkirk, NY, and in February, 1942 enlisted in the Navy. During the war Mr. Fenner served in the Pacific theatre as a commissioned officer on the U.S.S. Drayton, DD366, (dubbed “The Blue Beetle”) from November 1942 until 1944. On the U.S.S. Drayton he participated in several naval encounters including the Battle of Tassafaronga and Leyte Gulf, during which the Drayton experienced severe damage from enemy gunfire and a kamikaze attack. He then served on the commissioning crew of the U.S.S. Vesole which supported the Allied occupation of Japan in 1945. After leaving active duty he remained in the U.S. Naval Reserves until retiring as a Lieutenant Commander in 1949. Mr. Fenner returned to Allegheny Ludlum to work in their Sales and Marketing Department. He and Mary wed in 1948, lived for several years in Michigan and Coraopolis, PA, and moved to Sewickley in 1958. Mr. Fenner earned a Master of Letters in Business and Marketing from the University of Pittsburgh in 1954 and rose to the position of Director of Sales. In 1976 he and other company executives bought out the Specialty Steels division to create the AL Tech Steel Corporation. He retired in 1980. Mr. Fenner developed several long-standing friendships through his love of golf, tennis, paddle tennis, and squash. He was a member of the Edgeworth Club, Allegheny Country Club, and Duquesne Club. In 1957 he served as Chairman of the Edgeworth Club's tennis committee to host the Wightman Cup professional tennis tournament; in which played Althea Gibson, the first African American Wimbledon Champion. He served as President of the Edgeworth Club in 1962. Milton and Mary were dedicated members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church where he ushered at the early service. He and Mary had many close friends with whom they loved to play golf, tennis, gin rummy and bridge. After Mary's death in 1993 he enjoyed a close friendship with Betty Hetherington, also of Sewickley. After retiring Mr. Fenner volunteered with the Pittsburgh Adult Literacy Council and taught several adults to read. He belonged to the Edgeworth Investors Club and was especially fond of the Gathering of Old Friends. Remarkably, Milton played tennis into his eighties and golf into his nineties. (He shot his age, finally, at 85.) Regardless of the weather he went for a long walk, every day, until the last years of his life. He befriended many dogs along the way. A talented letter writer and toast-maker, he had a keen interest in grammar, expression, poetry, music, and word-puzzles. He recently learned to navigate the iPad, using it to find song lyrics, performances, music and stock market information. Mr. Fenner possessed strong self-discipline, held high expectations and maintained a die-straight integrity. He was known for his clean, dry wit, his engaging personality and a dignified humility. He should also be remembered for his commitment to his family and his generosity to the community he loved. Mr. Fenner is survived by his children, Missy Fenner, her children, Tucker and Meg Stolberg, their father, Ted Stolberg, his daughter, Lindsay Heller, and her daughter, Georgia, John Fenner, his wife Jaye Moyer, her daughter, Molly, David Fenner, his wife Kashka Kubzdela, and their daughter Nicola. Mr. Fenner was predeceased by his first son, Milton M. (Mike) Fenner IV; his sister, Florence F. (Peggy) Aular; and his wife, Mary. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Fenner family plot in Fredonia, New York. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or the M.M. Fenner IV (Mike) Fund at Sewickley Academy. Send condolences at post-gazette.com/gb

BARNES NICHOLAS BRASTINS AGE 2...

BARNES NICHOLAS BRASTINS Age 20, of Aspinwall and Mount Washington, died recently at the University of Chicago, where he was a third-year student. He will be remembered as a warm and loving friend, a lively debater, a dedicated scholar and an adventurous traveler. Nick was born on May 25, 1993. He reveled in the freedom of being homeschooled through eighth grade, and especially loved outings to the Carnegie Library and Museums of Art and Natural History. He was a Class of 2011 graduate of Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel, a place he adored and where he lettered in cross country, started a cricket club, and rather disliked playing on the hockey team as he was a self-described pacifist. Nick was an enthusiastic Library Associate and English Associate, a thoughtful editor and creative graphic designer of the Egerian and Angles literary publications, and president of the German club. He enjoyed Speech and Debate team, performed in The Importance of Being Earnest, delighted in seeing his cartoons in the school newspaper and excelled at his studies. At the University of Chicago, Nick was pursuing a double major in Germanic studies and History. The regard of his professors and friends may be seen in this link to his University of Chicago obituary: http://news.uchicago. edu/article/2014/02/24/nicholas-barnes-third-year-college-student-1993-2014. Nick was preparing to return to Germany during summer term, to pursue his studies and conduct research toward his graduation requirements in the following year. He felt deeply honored to attend the University of Chicago and greatly enjoyed his time there. He was a distinctive figure on campus and loved the blustery winter weather, striding in his long woolen coat, signature red Converse high-tops and large blue and white muffler, which, as he liked to note, had been knit by authentic Latvian grandmothers. Among his wide circle of friends, Nick was known for his intellectual drive, his exceptional wit, his love of knowledge, his droll sense of humor, and his ease in his own skin. The temporal brevity of Nick's life is in direct contrast to the enormous breadth of adventures, travels and interests he pursued. This Laurence Sterne quote describes him well: "What a large volume of adventures may be grasped within this little span of life, by him who interests his heart in everything, and who, having eyes to see what time and chance are perpetually holding out to him as he journeyeth on his way, misses nothing he can fairly lay his hands on." -A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy. Nick will be forever loved and held within the hearts and minds of his sister, Clara Barnes; his grandmother, Emily Brastins; his father, Jay Barnes; his mother, Laura Maynes (formerly Linda Brastins Barnes); his stepfather, Greg Maynes; his stepbrother, Bill Maynes; and many more dear family members and friends. A memorial gathering is planned for the spring. Donations in his memory may be made to http://www.DonationTo.com/Nicholas-Brastins-Barnes. Our hope is to fund and endow a Nicholas Brastins Barnes Prize to be awarded annually at Shady Side Academy's Prize Day, so that Nick's bright spirit and curious mind might continue to positively influence other young scholars.
