THOMAS L. HAYES Age 68, of Upper St. Clair, suddenly on Wednesday, June 19, 2019. Beloved husband of Debra (Burke); dear father of Brian Hayes, Sara (Josh) Sunderlin and Rebecca (Rich) Ward; loving grandfather of Amelia and Sadie Sunderlin and Roman, Asher and Theo Ward; brother of Paula (Bob) Sheridan, Patricia (Bob) Stack and the late Joseph (surviving spouse Anna) Hayes; also many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Tom gave his heart and soul for his community and what truly fulfilled him was being able to assist those in need. He was a beloved member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where he served as Deacon and lived to spread the word of God. Tom truly lived his life to the fullest through simple pleasures: golfing almost daily, chatting with friends and family, sailing the Chesapeake, and some of his most cherished memories were spent traveling the world with the love of his life for 40 years, Debby. Tom showed us what every man should strive for in life to be: a dedicated son, a loving father, a devoted husband and the world's best Papa. DAWN CLARE "MUM" "NUNNY" GOB Age 79, peacefully passed away in her home on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 with her two sons at her side. She was born May 4, 1940 in Pittsburgh, the youngest of two children, to the late DeWayne and Alma (Krauss) Lewis. She grew up in Mount Oliver and Baldwin. After marrying the late Arthur J. in 1963, she resided in Bethel Park for nearly 55 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Audrey (Lewis). Her adoring sons, Scott and Craig are left to cherish her memory as well as her beloved granddaughters, Olivia Ann Gob, Alexandria Claire Gob and Sophia Josephine Gob. She attended Burroughs Business School at night while completing her education at Baldwin High School. After graduating, she worked as an executive secretary at American Water Works in Mt. Lebanon, PA until she and her husband decided to start a family. After fully committing to raising her sons for 13 years, Dawn returned to the workforce where she served as an assistant to the PA State Senate and House Representatives, helping constituents in the south hills communities. Her contagious smile and approachable demeanor served perfectly the responsibilities she was appointed. She retired in 2012 after working nearly 30 years. A marvelous cook and baker, in retirement, she continued pursuing her passions, spending time with family and friends, enjoying her granddaughters, and traveling extensively. As per Dawn's wishes, there will be no visitations however, a Memorial Service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life. ANNA D. (DILLON) ROHALL Of Swissvale, age 88, died on Thursday, June 20, 2019. Ann was the beloved wife of the late John Rohall for 56 years; dear sister of John (Margaret) Dillon of Oakdale and the late Mary Margaret (late Cyril) Getsie of Swissvale. Ann was also preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Mary (Cooney) Dillon; John's brothers, Leonard (late Mary) and Richard (late Helen) Rohall and John's sister, Joan (late Joe “Beaver”) Starek. Ann is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Ann was employed in the Medical Records Department of the former Homestead Hospital and retired from the Jefferson Hospital. She was a member of the all-Ireland Club of Squirrel Hill and a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the A.O.H. Ann enjoyed celebrating her Irish Heritage and also visiting casinos. RICHARD L. ANDERSON Age 85, of Mt. Lebanon, passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2019. He was born in Mt. Lebanon on September 20, 1933, a son to the late Harold and Marjorie Cattell Anderson. Richard graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School, Class of 1951. Following graduation from Purdue University as an Engineer, he joined the US Army Chemical Corp. In 1958, at the age of 23, Richard became the President of Anderson Equipment Company and remained Chairman. Richard was a member of many community organizations including the Young Presidents Organization and a longtime member of St. Clair Country Club. He was an official for High School and College Football and coached girl's softball teams. Richard loved golfing, fishing, running and bowling. He was a History buff as well as an avid Pittsburgh Sports Fan. On October 18, 1958, he married his beloved wife of 60 years, Caroline Lukawecz Anderson. Surviving in addition to his wife are four daughters, Donna Anderson and her husband, John Hibshman, and their children, Madison, Matthew, and Keaton Hibshman, Judy Anderson and her husband, Bill Gex, and their children, Donald and Ryan Gex, Karen Anderson and her husband, David Henderson, and their children, Noah and Ana Henderson, and Kimberly Anderson and her husband, David DiFranco, and their children, Kathryn, Jack, and Daniel DiFranco; and a son, Michael Anderson and his children, Kayleigh and Janelle Anderson. Deceased are a daughter, Teresa Anderson; and a brother, Douglas Anderson. RITA (KANE) BURNS Formerly of Pittsburgh, passed away at the age of 98, on Thursday, June 6, 2019, in Monterey Park, California. She was the daughter of former Pittsburgh Commissioner, John J. Kane and Elinor Houlihan Kane. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings, David Kane, John Kane, Jr., Dorothy Kane Smallhoover, and Francis X. Kane, and her son, Timothy Burns. She is survived by her children, David, Patrick, Christopher, Janet and Anthony Burns; grandchildren, Sean, Ian, Daniel and Bridget Burns; and great-granddaughter, Laila Burns. JAMES DAVID ADELMAN, PhD Age 75, of Hampton Township, died on Saturday, June 1, 2019. He was born to William and Isabel (Walker) Adelman on October 23, 1943 in Johnstown, PA. He was the beloved husband of Karen E. Rehder, MD. Dr. Adelman obtained a BA in psychology and a Masters of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh. He then attended Luther Seminary in Gettysburg, PA for one year. After that he joined the US Army Medical Service Corp and was stationed at Fort Benning, GA for 3 ½ years. He counseled many veterans who were then returning from Vietnam, along with several older survivors of Pearl Harbor. He was called to testify before the US Senate, and this resulted in his work to start the first alcohol recovery program for the US Army. This program was so successful that it was expanded to the Navy and Air Force. He continued in the Army Reserves for another five years after he returned to Pittsburgh. He managed the outpatient counseling department for Sewickley Hospital for 35 years and at the same time completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology. As a clinical psychologist, he was compassionate, yet able to challenge his patients to grow. He combined humor with empathy. At age 65, he retired from the hospital and continued in private practice until his death. He was a devout Christian all his life and provided counseling to many of the clergy as well as fellow Christians. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his daughter, Amy Adleman; and his granddaughter, Jules Adelman. MARY E. "BETTE" (THOMAS) LEONARD Age 92, of Roaring Brook Twp passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Mountain View Care Center in Scranton. She was the widow of Morgan F. Leonard and the couple was married for 62 years when he passed away on September 29, 2011. Born in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Mulrow) Thomas. She graduated from St. Rosalia High School in Pittsburgh and was a member of the Church of Saint Eulalia in Roaring Brook Twp. where she volunteered at the parish breakfasts and ran the tricky tray stand at the annual picnic. Bette was a member of the Moscow Women's Club and of the PTA at the North Pocono School District. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. Bette is survived by her sons: William Leonard and his wife Ellen of Erie, Joseph Leonard of Roaring Brook Twp and his companion Sharon Delucy and Sean Leonard and his wife Tonya of Pittsburgh; her grandchildren: Jessica Leonard of Pittsburgh, Megan Lewis and her husband Dale of Spring Brook Twp., Dawn Dempsey of Scranton, Corrine Dempsey of Covington Twp., Natasha Schiemer and her husband Mark of Pittsburgh, Jason Gurnari and his wife Heather of Louisville; her great grandchildren:Andrew Gruden, Logan and Grayson Chabal, Isaac Schiemer, Joshua Gurnari, James Lewis, and Blake Morgan Lewis, the apple of her eye. In addition to her husband Morgan, Bette was preceded in death by her sons: Robert “Bobby”, Jeffrey and Patrick and her daughter in law: Mary Lou Leonard. CATHERINE "KAY" BARRETT LOCHNER (1930-2019) In Bradenton, Florida, on June 10, 2019. Kay was a former resident of Pittsburgh, PA. She graduated from St. Paul Cathedral High School and the University of Pittsburgh, and received her graduate degree from Duquesne University. She was employed by the Pittsburgh Board of Education for over 30 years. She began her career at H.C. Frick Elementary School and also taught at Columbus Middle School. From 1977 until her retirement in 1996, she served as a School Psychologist. While in Pittsburgh she was a volunteer at Phipps Conservatory and Passavant Hospital. She was a member of the Association of University Women and the League of Women Voters. Kay loved to travel, especially with her grandchildren. She took her grandsons Sean and Paul to the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, her grandsons Brian and David to Alaska, and her granddaughter Allyson to Paris and Venice. Kay believed everyone should see Venice. Kay left her beloved Pittsburgh and its association with the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Steelers, the Penguins, Andy Warhol, August Wilson, Gene Kelly, Mr. Rogers, etc., in 2009 and moved to Florida. There she enjoyed the outdoor activities provided by the excellent weather. She especially enjoyed membership in the PBC Book Club and the company of her wonderful neighbors. Kay is preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Lochner. She is survived by her beloved children, W. Christopher Lochner (Janet) of Hampton Township, PA, Ann Smith (Craig) of Lake Worth, FL, and John Lochner (Ruth Ann) of Bradenton, FL; and eight wonderful grandchildren. ALEXANDRIA ALICE (COMKO) KINDLING Age 89, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019, in Pittsburgh, PA. She was born August 23, 1929, in Monessen, PA, to Michael and Tillie Comko. She attended Monessen High School, Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Pittsburgh. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy; and grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, and Adam; and predeceased by her first husband, Jay Chauss, whom she married in 1951, and her second husband, Alexander T. Kindling, whom she married in 1976. She is predeceased by her siblings, Matthew, Ann, Julie, and Charles Comko. Beginning her career as a nurse, Alice continued to work in public health for nearly 60 years. She promoted innovation in the field, including in her role as an administrator at the Allegheny County Health Department, where she acquired funding to introduce a Preventative Dental Sealant Program, earning her recognition by the American Society of Dentistry for Children, and by Allegheny County as the recipient of the first Lucchino Award for Distinguished Service in 2000. Alice was a recognized authority, speaker, lecturer and writer, and earned a number of awards for her work including a House of Representatives Commonwealth of Pennsylvania citation. She also served on the Board of Directors for the University of Pittsburgh since 1972, and was elected emeritus in 1999. Alice's family will remember her for her dedication to her career and the strong support and guidance she provided to the family. They will miss hearing her stories and her reflections on life. A private memorial service will be held for family members. MICHAEL RICHARD BERDAR Age 76, of Comfort, Texas, died at 4:22 p.m., Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. A memorial service for friends in Texas will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019, at HOLT & HOLT FUNERAL HOME in Boerne. A service for his family and friends in Pennsylvania will be scheduled at a later date. Born Oct. 5, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mike was the son of the late Simon and Hettie (Lambert) Berdar. He was one of six siblings. Until the age of nine, he lived with his family in the Hazelwood section of Pittsburgh. In 1951, the family moved to a farm in Venango County where he attended schools at Wesley and was a member of the Victory Joint High School Class of 1961. Mr. Berdar entered service with the United States Navy in August 1961. He trained at Great Lakes, Illinois, and as an aircraft mechanic he was stationed aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier in the Pacific region. He was honorably discharged in 1966. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Berdar went to work as a repairman for RCA in Philadelphia. Throughout most of the 1970s, he worked for the Conair Plastics Company, based in Franklin, Pennsylvania, and during that time traveled extensively throughout the United States and, on occasion, overseas. He relocated his family to Bryan, Texas, in 1979 when he accepted a position as a switching technician with GTE. He remained with GTE, later Verizon, until his retirement in 2007. During his years with the telecommunications company, he worked out of offices in Bryan, College Station, Buda, Kyle, Wimberly and Boerne. He was thrice married, first to Layne Trace, March 4, 1966, in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, then to Sandra Brumbaugh, September 22, 1973, in Grove City, Pennsylvania. Mike and Layne reunited in marriage on Jan. 9, 1998, in San Marcos, Texas. They made their home in Comfort, Texas from 1998 until his death. Mr. Berdar was always interested in his Hungarian and Appalachian heritage and did extensive research on the Berdar family tree. In what was the trip of a lifetime, he accompanied his niece, Joanna Fuchs, to Budapest, Hungary, and traveled with her to his grandparents' home village. Mike loved movies, especially action, adventure, sci-fi and comedies. He had a way with all animals, cats in particular, and had many special four-legged friends over the course of his lifetime. Mike is survived by his wife of 21 years, Layne Berdar; his daughter, Rebecca Berdar; and her husband, Tim Busko; and their son, Aaron Busko, of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania; his sister, Bernadette Franks; and her husband, Jim, of Oil City, Pennsylvania; his brother, James Berdar, of Kennerdell, Pennsylvania; his sister, Anita Fuchs; and her husband, David, of Polk, Pennsylvania; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Simon Berdar; his mother, Hettie Lambert Berdar; his brother, Simon Berdar, Jr.; his sister, Deborah Jolley; and twin sons who died in infancy. NANCY K. SMIDER Age 69, of Dravosburg, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 20, 2019. Nancy is survived by her loving brother, "Jack" (Andrea) Kunzic; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael G. Smider; father, John Kunzic; mother, Alice Kunzic; and sister, Maureen Stetzer. Nancy started her career working at Allegheny County Airport for Page Airways and retired as a Flight Administrator for Corporate Air after working there for 19 years. She loved her lifelong friends, the "CalGirls," who will miss her dearly, listening to her Oldies, and her trips to the Rivers. Family would like to thank her special friends and the staff on the 4th floor at Jefferson Regional Cancer Center for all of their love and care.
