PETRONKO DENNIS A. OF MT. WASH...

PETRONKO DENNIS A. Of Mt. Washington, died December 5, 2014, at age 67, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Diane Knox Petronko; and his children and their spouses, Nicholas (Chelsea) of Los Angeles, CA, and Kristina (Jonathan Lafky) of Easton, PA; also survived by brothers, Clifford of Latrobe, PA and Larry of Barboursville, WV; as well as nephews and a niece. Born April 21, 1947, to Andrew and Martha Petronko, Dennis grew up in Belle Vernon. He graduated from Rostraver Township High School in 1965 in the same class as his wife; the couple married in 1972. Following graduation from West Virginia University where he received a degree in industrial engineering in 1969, he served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam from 1970-1971. As sergeant and squad leader in a reconnaissance unit near the DMZ (demilitarized zone), he spent long periods under fire, at one point serving 103 consecutive days unprotected in dense jungle terrain. He received the Bronze Star for his service. This past November 18, 2014, as he did every year, he celebrated the anniversary of his return to the U.S. from Vietnam with friends and champagne. A born entrepreneur and superb negotiator, Dennis joined Fisher Controls in Marshalltown Iowa as a sales engineer. Returning to the Pittsburgh area in 1977, he worked for Equipment and Controls, which represented Fisher Controls (now Emerson Process Management) in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. He later became the president and owner of Equipment and Controls. Under his leadership, Equipment and Controls expanded to also represent Emerson in West Africa, providing equipment and services to the oil production industry throughout the region. Emerson commended his “adventurous and visionary” approach. In 2003, Dennis sold the domestic company while retaining the international business. Dennis was a founder and partner in many other businesses, serving as a mentor to younger colleagues upon whom he made a profound impact. “The risks that you were willing to take have helped so many people earn a living and provide for their families, whether a few miles away in Pittsburgh or thousands of miles away in Africa and India,” one recently wrote. He demanded the best of his co-workers and always led by example: he never retired, working actively until his death. During his years of international business travel, his passport frequently ran out of pages. Throughout his career, he relished skiing, hunting, and travel. “Getting drafted was the best thing that ever happened to me,” he would joke, because it sparked his curiosity to travel and subsequently successfully pursue international business opportunities. He developed relationships that became lifelong friendships all over the world and, with his wife, completed an around- the-world journey in 2010, during which he revisited Vietnam. In 2013, despite his illness, he took his family to visit his Russian ancestral village of Skwirtne, now part of Poland. Private arrangements will be handled by the THOMAS M. DOLFI FUNERAL HOME in Uniontown (724-437-4651). Friends and family will celebrate Dennis' generosity, courage and example at a Memorial Service to be scheduled in early January 2015. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, 1 N. Linden St., Duquesne, PA 15110; www.pittsburghfoodbank.org. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
