SHAFFER EUGENE “GENE” Eugene "Gene" Shaffer, age 75, of Pine Township, formerly of Terrace Village, Pittsburgh, PA. Beloved husband for 32 years of Lou Ann (Arnold) Shaffer; father of Michelle (Eric Carroll) Christner, Eugene Shaffer, Jr., Michael (Stephanie) Shaffer, Johanna (Andrew DeLuca) Shaffer, and the late Robert (surviving spouse Jennifer) Siegworth; grandfather of Bobby, Nicholas, Rachel, and Brody; brother of William Shaffer, Judy White, Kathy Schwenning, John Shaffer, and the late JoAnn Shaffer; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Gene was born January 12, 1942, the son of the late William and Anna Skoko Shaffer. He graduated from Connelley Vocational High School with the Class of 1961 and enlisted with the U.S. Army in February of 1962. He served in Korea with the 581st Signal Corps as radio operator and was honorably discharged in May of 1967. After serving with the army, and with the help of his mother, Gene enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy Program at Magee Women's Hospital and began his lifelong career as respiratory therapist. He worked in most hospitals in the Pittsburgh area and taught respiratory therapy at the Community College of Allegheny County. After his retirement, Gene focused on the things he most enjoyed in life... his family, his friends, his motorhome, and sitting on the porch, "the veranda", "watching the grass grow" and waiting on the hummingbirds. Gene leaves us with many memories and words of wisdom such as, "If a buzzard had a banjo... there would be music in the air", "keep your eye on the prize", and " 'bout an hour..." DIMATTIA ADA M. Age 101, of Clairton, passed away on Sun., Feb. 5, 2017. Born Oct. 16, 1915, in Vallecupa, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Fioravanti and Ida (Santilli) Ginestra. Ada was a member of St. Clare of Assisi Parish and the Sons of Columbus, Regina Della Valle #40. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Emilio DiMattia, who passed away in 1955; two daughters, Anna (Jack) Matz and Josephine (Frank) Scarsella; and brothers, Ettore, Ugo and Licurgo Ginestra. Ada is survived by her daughters, Dea (Robert) Bonacchi and Ida (the late George) Ward, both of Clairton; her son, Domenic (Joanne) DiMattia of Jefferson Hills; her grandchildren, Bruno Bonacchi, Sean Ward, Cristina Cercone, Emily Jo McCowan, Shannon Matz, Dino and Anthony Scarsella, and Elisa Bayiates; her great- grandchildren, Mary, John, Lucia, Daniel, Ian, Giovanna, Mario, Valory, Enzo, Nico and Valentino; and also nieces and nephews. ZIER WILLIAM “BILL” Well respected by his peers and Hyundai Automotive for innovative business ideas, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 30, 2017, at his home in Cabot, PA, formerly a longtime resident of Moon Township. He was 57. Born in Penn Hills on January 9, 1960, he was the only child born to the late Lee and Jean Zier. He is survived by his loving and cherished son, Chris Zier of Aliquippa and his girlfriend, Mary Ann, along with many wonderful friends. Bill went into a career with Hyundai where he was district manager. Bill loved living life. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, sports, traveling, being adventurous, always trying new restaurants and was a huge Harley Davidson Motorcycle Fan. SAS VALERIO KATHERINE “KAY” Katherine “Kay” Sas Valerio, age 95, of Elizabeth Twp., died Thursday, February 2, 2017. She was born in Vintondale, PA, on February 8, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Charles and Anna Souvchyn Sas; and the wife of the late Walter Valerio; and mother of the late Walter Robert “Bob” Valerio. She was a partner and secretary of Wally & Joe's Welding Service in McKeesport and also loved volunteering at McKeesport Hospital in her spare time. She is survived by her granddaughter, Robin Chew and her children, Nicholle, Natalie, Samantha and Gabrielle Chew; and great-grandchildren, Corey and Carrie Byrnes, children of her granddaughter, the late Cindy Byrnes; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was born in December, 1924 to the late John and Mary (McGranor) and was preceded in death by brothers, John, James and Raymond; and sister, Eileen (Wagner). Tom retired as a Lieutenant from the Pittsburgh Police Department in 1989 and served his country in WWII as a member of the Army Air Corps. DZIKOWSKI CRAIG W. Age 56, went to be with the Lord on Sat., Feb. 4, 2017.He passed peacefully in his home surrounded by family. Born Dec. 24, 1960, in Pittsburgh, PA to Carole and Alexander Dzikowski, he was the second of their four sons. As a painter by trade, he spent most of his life bringing warmth into the homes of many. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Russel. Craig is survived by his adoring mother, Carole Rock; loving wife, Susan Parham; beloved children, Nicole Fife (Daniel), Craig "Bud" Dzikowski, Ashley Dzikowski, and Dylan Dzikowski; cherished grandchildren, Melody and Avery Fife; treasured stepdaughters, Stephanie Parham (William), Jennifer Parham (Jay); and dear step- grandchildren, Lavonte, Maddalyn, Maysen, and Maisley; also two brothers, Jeff (Sue) and Keith; and many other members of his extended family and close friends. Craig was full of life, love, and charity for the people around him. LANDAU MICHELE FRANCOISE Of Tucson, Arizona, born in Toulon, France on December 4, 1941, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017. She was the only child of Sophie and Felicien Martel. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Wayne; and her two sons, Anthony (Natalie) of Pittsburgh, PA and Stephen (Laura) of Whitehouse Station, NJ. She spent her first 11 years in Paris and Aiguebelle, a small village on the French Riviera. After her father passed away, she and her mother followed family to Pittsburgh, PA where she completed high school, and secretarial school. She worked as a translator at US Steel for a period before being married. She raised her family in Pittsburgh and the last 24 years were spent in Tucson, AZ. She was an avid reader, an accomplished cook, and also enjoyed many years skiing, hiking, and travel with family and friends. Michele requested to be cremated without a memorial service. MOUSSEAU ROBERT “BOB” Age 91, of St. Joseph, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at Hanson Hospice Center in Stevensville. Arrangements have been entrusted to STARKS & MENCHINGER CHAPEL & CREMATION SERVICES. Per Bob's request, his body has been donated to the University of Michigan Anatomical Donation Program. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at his daughter's, Janet Shipe, house at a later date. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks- menchinger.com. Bob was born on January 19, 1926, in Pittsburgh, PA to Charles and Myrtle Mousseau. In 1943, he graduated from Swissvale High School, then went to work at Union Switch & Signal Machine Shop. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force Cadet Program where he trained to become a Bombardier. By the time training was completed, the war had ended; Bob was honorably discharged on October 26, 1945. Shortly after, he worked as an apprentice machinist at Edgar Thompson Steel Mill in Braddock, PA. On September 10, 1949, Bob married Betty Wilson at Swissvale Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended Grove City College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Physical Science in 1952. Bob began his teaching career at New Brighton High School where he taught physics and science. He later taught mathematics at Penn Hills High School. Shortly after, for two years Bob became the Assistant Quality Control Engineer at Allegheny Stainless Steel Corp. Bob continued teaching physics and mathematics at Oakmont High School then transferred and retired from Churchill High School where he taught physics, mathematics and astronomy. In 1963, he was sent to the Goddard Spaceflight Center to co-author a book dealing with mathematics in space science for secondary schools, which is still in publication today. Bob was a life member of the Elks Lodge in Oakmont, PA and the Masonic Lodge 510 in Penn Hills, PA. He sang in many church choirs and belonged to the Village Singers. He enjoyed golfing, tennis, swimming, fishing, softball, playing bridge and gardening. Throughout his time teaching, he also coached four different sports. To Bob, life was a game to make friends. Bob is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Janet Shipe and Chris (Marc) Connelly; grandchildren, Emily (Kristofer) Bergman, Steven (Molly) Shipe, Michael (Kirsten) Connelly, and Matthew Connelly; great-grandchildren, Sofia and Olivia Bergman and Riley and Parker Connelly. NAPOLI FRANK A. Frank A. Napoli went peacefully to the Lord on February 7, 2017, after a courageous three year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Born on April 16, 1953 to Frank and Antoinette (DeBellis) Napoli, Frank grew up in Penn Hills. He received both his bachelor and graduate degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, and had a distinguished career in finance with several Pittsburgh area corporations. In 2011 he was a finalist for the Pittsburgh Business Time's CFO of the Year award. In 2015 his illness forced him to retire from his position as Chief Financial Officer of Cygnus Manufacturing Corporation in Saxonburg, PA. Frank is survived by his wife of 35 years, Michele; his three daughters, Alexandra (Kevin) Larson, Janna Napoli (Michael Way) and Marina Napoli; his sister, Rosanne (David) Rust; nephews, Matthew, Max and Marcus Rust; and his soon-to- be-born granddaughter.
