LIBERTY Z. PYROS Liberty Z. Pyros was a wonderful lady. Never has she spoken any unkind word. She was always smiling and speaking in a very positive manner. She was married for 55 wonderful years and bore four children. She herself was one of eight children. They lived in an old coal mining town called Burgettstown where their facilities was an outhouse. Though born in United States she could not speak a word of English when she first attended parochial school. However with her determination to do well she graduated valedictorian of her class. As a result of her achievements she was awarded a college scholarship. However due to financial reasons her family could not afford more than one year. She was determined to complete her education and start employment with the University of Pittsburgh that enabled her to receive six free credits per year as an employee. This was quite a struggle for her because she still lived in Burgettstown. She rode a bus to downtown and then took a street car to Pitt to be there at 6 a.m. for employment. After pursuing this for seven years she graduated. Upon graduation she got married and then continued her education in grad school. Her first employment was as an engineer at Westinghouse. Subsequently she bore four children and then taught calculus part time at University of Pittsburgh and CCAC for more than 25 years. Her second passion was duplicate bridge where she obtained the ranking of a Life Master and a director. She held weekly games at the University Club and the Pittsburgh Athletic Association. She authored a 250 page book on the actual plays of duplicate bridge. She spent many of her summers in Greece (Crete) and in our second home in Myrtle Beach. She enjoyed many friends in Greece and in Myrtle Beach and to this day they still correspond with her. One of her sons best describes the feeling that you have when you're with her saying, “you are a great mom and are always there for me. It's obvious that you cared very much for all your children. Thanks for teaching us the simple things in life. The more we realize how much God loves us, the more grateful we are to have a Mom who truly cares." Sadly, Liberty suffered with Alzheimer's affliction for many years which limited her social life. The funeral and liturgy will be held at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church, FRIDAY, April 10, 2020, at 11:30 a.m. Due to present circumstances attendance is limited. Therefore the service will be live streamed. WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, (412-563-2800), 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp., entrusted with arrangements by the Pyros Family. www.slaterfuneral.com. MARY LEE FLEMING Mary Lee Fleming, age 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at George Washington University Hospital. She was born July 23, 1952 in, Newport, RI to Barry and Margaret Fleming. She obtained her Bachelors in Psychology from Merrimack College in 1974 and her Master of Science in Mental Health Program Evaluation and Research form Hahnemann University in 1977. Mary devoted her life's work to the behavioral health field and the people it served in many ways. In a career spanning more than three decades, she served as a leader in the public and private sectors as the Executive Vice President of Franklin County Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Services Board in Columbus, OH; the Executive Director of the Hamilton County Community Mental Health Board in Cincinnati, OH; Vice President for Value Options; the Chief Executive Officer of Allegheny Health Choices, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA; and the Director of the Office of Policy, Planning and Innovation and the Associate Administrator for Women's Services at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in Washington, DC. Most recently, Mary was Managing Partner of the Washington, DC and Eastern United States office for Via Positiva Behavioral Health Consulting. She was a mentor, a reliable and honest colleague to many, a trusted critic and motivator, and an inspiring voice and perpetual advocate for the millions of people with addictions and mental health conditions. As one colleague said, “She was a real leader, a pioneer, and we will miss her.” Mary always, always brought more than what she left. It is who she was. She left us with a body that was never as strong as her miraculous soul. Mary was a truly amazing person facing and achieving multiple victories over cancer, two bionic knees, countless surgeries, and an unwillingness to let anything stop her. She left us a terrible towel, a Penguins jersey, and a poster of Roberto Clemente. She left us with a million unorganized recipes, half a bottle of very expensive scotch, notes of encouragement, and 12 pairs of reading glasses. What she brought to all she met is incalculable love. That love and joy stemmed from bringing up her beloved son Nathan Fleming, who misses his mother like no other. In the mornings she would be his alarm clock and school bus. In the evenings, she would be his number one fan. Never missing a game. She always believed in him and gave him avenues to pursue his passions She always went above and beyond to make him feel loved. She brought him opportunity and shared him with all her friends and family. It was always them against the world, usually winning. She has given him what he needs to be a strong, compassionate, and successful man and boyfriend to his amazing girlfriend, Christie Horan. Mary is survived by brother Jim, nieces Adrienne and Heather and nephew Stephen as well as by many cousins and other family members to whom she brought her caring, laughter, and commitment. Cousin Peggy Ozawa of Chicago, IL dreamed of retiring with Mary together. Mary brought the planning and encouragement. Peggy's son Max and daughter Christina and her son Jordan loved Mary and Nathan dearly. Mary brought her cousins, nieces, nephews, and aunts (esp. Mary Beth, Janet and Joan) as well as her many friends (esp. Chris, Pam, June, Maureen, Julie, Suzanne, Anne, Ginny, Gerri and Jill) her presence in time of need, the loudest voice at PNC Park and Wrigley Field, and laughter when we needed it most. She would go anywhere for any of us if we needed her. She always connected with us and loved us. For her multitude of friends, she brought an uncommon commitment to us and our families. She brought an intuition of our needs; knowing the kind words or wake-up call we needed. She brought the party to life for the first hour; she was the first one to step up when we were down, and the first one to raise a glass to celebrate. She brought a limitless and unselfish obligation to our friendships that was greater than the challenges she faced. She always put us first. We all miss Mary dearly. We all think she will walk through our doors at any minute, because she was a persistent, positive, and loving force in all our lives that we have now lost. As we face the challenges of gathering to celebrate Mary's life, we will be planning a future memorial celebration when we can all be there to tell our stories of her; to cry, laugh, rejoice, grieve, and remember the amazing person that brought so much to our lives. In lieu of flowers, we would encourage those who want to pay tribute to consider a donation to the following organization Mary believed in and to which she donated her time and expertise. S.A.F.E. (Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic) Project was founded in November 2017 by Admiral James and Mary Winnefeld, following the loss of their 19-year old son Jonathan to an accidental opioid overdose. SAFE Project will be creating an annual award in Mary's name. Donate on line at https://www.safeproject.us/about-us/ or by check made out to SAFE Project and mailed to Jeff Horwitz, 1175 Stone Creek Dr., Hummelstown, PA 17036. Please indicate the donation is in memory of Mary L. Fleming. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

JOAN MCNAIR HURRELL On Wednesday, April 8, Joan McNair Hurrell, of Penn Hills, PA, died suddenly following a brief illness. Born of Scottish immigrant parents, David and Joann McNair in Wilkinsburg, PA, on December 25, 1928, Joan grew up celebrating her Scottish heritage. She was one of six children who have all preceded her in death. She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1946 and began working as an operator for the Bell Telephone Co. On September 9, 1950, Joan married Allen Wade Hurrell, (died February 2, 2009) and spent the next 59 years together raising their five children and enjoying five grandchildren. For all who knew her, Joan was known as a consummate teacher, dedicating herself to Early Childhood Education. Her love of children led her to become a preschool teacher at East Liberty Presbyterian Church's Nursery School and to later found the Nursery School Program at Linway Presbyterian Church in North Versailles, PA, which still exists today. She remained the Director of the school for the next 25 years. Her dedication to children continued long after her retirement, as a volunteer at the Penn Hills School District Kindergarten, to which she donated her services until this year. As a lifelong member, Elder, Deacon, and current Hospitality committee member of Beulah Presbyterian Church in Churchill, she also lent her teaching skills to the Sunday School for children and to the Exceptional Friends. When asked how she was able to communicate so well will preschoolers, she often attributed her success to listening, patience, and ruling with not only discipline, but with a kind heart. Joan, along with her husband Wade, were active long-time members of Edgewood Country Club in Churchill. Both avid golfers, they participated in many club tournaments and events. Joan served as vice-president and president of the Women's Golf Association at Edgewood and she also served as Co-chairman of the Club's decorating committee for over 25 years. Joan loved to travel and took many trips around the globe with her husband. Her most recent trips were to her beloved Scotland with her daughter in 2016 and a river cruise down the Columbia River in 2018. She was an avid supporter of the Arts, and maintained season tickets to both the Broadway Series and Symphony Pops. Her love of beauty manifested itself in her garden and in the many years spent decorating Edgewood CC and the church for the holidays. She was also a phenomenal baker to which all who have sampled her cookies, cakes, and pies, can attest. She spent many years donating her baked goods to the church and to various organizations. Joan Hurrell is survived by her children, Deborah Hurrell, Mark (Marianna) Hurrell, Susan Hurrell (Monica Prebish), Elizabeth Hurrell, and David (Diane) Hurrell; and grandchildren, Brooke, John, Samantha, and Jennifer. Her eldest grandchild, Nathan, preceded her in death in 2014. A Memorial Service for Joan Hurrell will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to either The American Cancer Society, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, or the Beulah Church Organ Fund. DR. SELDON VAUGHN WHITAKER, JR...

DR. SELDON VAUGHN WHITAKER, JR. Age 79, of Longwood at Oakmont, Verona, PA. Born June 12, 1940 in Bryn Mawr, PA to Vivian Altemus Whitaker and Seldon Vaughn Whitaker, Sr. Big brother to Sharon Whitaker Friedman [Mark]. Devoted husband of 50 years to his high school sweetheart, the late Susan Gurry Whitaker. Involved and encouraging father to Kathryn Whitaker Hicks [Ron] and the late Laura Richardson Whitaker. Lighthearted uncle to Alison Waldo O'Grady [Patrick] and Kimberly Anne Fourman [Brian]. Indulgent and very proud “Papa” to Susan Margaret Hicks; delighted honorary “Gampoose” to Oliver Sherman Shumsky. In his years at Conestoga High School (Berwyn, PA), Sel distinguished himself on the football field as offensive-defensive tackle. Though his unusual size and talent earned him full scholarships to top college programs, Sel opted to attend Williams College (Williamstown, MA), testament that his abilities were not solely athletic. After graduation, he earned his master's in education at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, PA) and set up his high school history classroom in the Great Valley School District (Malvern, PA). In spite of helping to organize one of the first teachers' unions, Sel found he could not support his family on a teacher's salary. He accepted an administrative position in the Concord-Carlisle School District (Concord, MA) and began working on his doctorate at Northeastern University (Boston, MA). Later, he assumed the superintendency of that district before accepting the invitation to lead the Duxbury School District (Duxbury, MA). His final superintendency was of the State College Area School District (State College, PA). When Sel reflected on this chapter of his life, he was proudest of involving teachers in decision-making, of elevating women to positions of leadership, and of the regular time he spent in the schools with students, visiting classrooms and serving lunch in the cafeteria. The next phase of Sel's professional life involved working with school districts and school boards to implement school improvement policies in Pennsylvania and across the United States. At Penn State (University Park, PA), he co-founded the Center for Total Quality Schools and was adjunct professor in the Department of Education Policy Studies in the College of Education. Highlights of this time period included teaching a course on the superintendency to future school leaders and the warm relationships that developed while hosting delegations of educators from Brazil. When their granddaughter was born, Sel and Sue moved to Pittsburgh, where they took up their role as grandparents with great joy. Sel loved classical music, learning about his ancestors, and traveling. An elder at East Liberty Presbyterian Church (Pittsburgh, PA), he drew upon his formidable fiscal management skills while serving on the finance committee. His charitable work revolved around social/educational justice and supporting other parents who had lost a child. Until the last few years of his life, Sel actively maintained and cherished deep relationships, many of which were lifelong. As his Alzheimer's progressed, he became less and less able to connect with those he cared about, something that is almost impossible for those of us who knew him in his fullness to imagine.
