JOSEPH ROY SOLLER Age 80, of Wexford, on Monday, April 6, 2020. Born February 4, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late Louis and Rose Soller. He was known by many names, “Pap” at home, “Joe” at work, “Roy” in the neighborhood, and “Mr. Man” to every person who benefited from his ability to fix nearly everything for everyone. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 56 years, Theodora “Teddy” (Jankus) Soller; his sisters, Sr. Rosalyn Soller and Dolores Herda; and his sons, Roy (Mary Alice) Soller, Eric (Jennifer) Soller, and Christopher (Laura) Soller. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, Haley, Katherine, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Anya and Matthew. Joseph, a proud North Side son, where he maintained friendships throughout his life, graduated from North Catholic High School in 1958. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, after which he was honorably discharged. Post military, he worked for over 30 years as a magician elevator installer and repairman all over Pittsburgh and West Virginia. In addition to being a lifelong Steelers season-ticket holder, he loved youth sports and coached and umpired McCandless baseball for countless seasons and attended as many North Allegheny football games as he could. JOEL ISADORE DUMONT Age 75, of Cabot, formerly of Cecil Twp. passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, April 4, 2020, in Good Samaritan Hospice. He was born April 18, 1944, in Nieuwpoort, Belgium, a fishing port on the North shore, a son of the late Jean and Elise Sandyck Dumont. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Joel retired from Alcoa as a fire protection engineer, where he traveled the world for 35 years. On June 10, 1967, he married Janice A. Radzai who survives after 53 years of marriage. Also left behind to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jillian Falbo and her husband, Michael of Freeport, and his grandchildren, Dominic and Sophia Falbo. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all services and interment in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Peters Twp. will be private and at the convenience of the family. VELMA FRANCES FRITSCH FERRARI Velma Frances (Fritsch) Ferrari died peacefully on Monday, April 6th. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and writer, she is survived by her children, Matthew (spouse, Melissa and grandson, Massimo) of Pittsburgh and son, Alex (spouse, Elizabeth and grandson, Leo) of Los Angeles. Born the only child of Velma Rose (Feckety) and Albert Fritsch, Velma graduated from Edgewood High School and later Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon). She transformed objects to beauty, acquaintances to friends, and happenstance to hilarity. She was active in various community organizations and was instrumental in starting Gamma Sports with her husband Harry, who reposed on August 3rd, 2016. They had been married since 1960. Words alone are insufficient to express the fullness of life that Harry and Velma had together. May their memories be eternal. DOMENICA HAYES Age 87, of Harrison City, died on Monday, April 6, 2020. She was born on September 21, 1932 in Pittsburgh, to the late Benny and Concetta (DeSimone) Saienni. Domenica was the former secretary of St. Regis Catholic School, and was a member of St. Barbara Catholic Church. She was very active, having enjoyed aerobics and tap. She loved writing poetry, camping, cooking, and spending time with her grandson, T.J. Domenica will be dearly missed by her children, John Edward Hayes, Gregory Alan Hayes, and Lauren Marie (Donald) Filus; her grandson, Theodore "T.J." Filus; and a brother, Dante Saienni. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, John G. Hayes, and a brother, Edward Saienni. Due to the health concerns regarding COVID-19, there will be no public services. Domenica will be laid to rest, with her husband John, privately in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. PATRICIA M. (SHAK) GLEDHILL Of Penn Hills, originally from Braddock, age 71, died Monday, April 6, 2020. Beloved wife of Walter G. Gledhill for 47 years. Loving mother of Brian (Amanda) Gledhill and Erik (Erin) Gledhill, both of Penn Hills. Dear sister of George Shak of North Versailles, Dan (Roseanne) Shak of Wilkins Twp., Gary (Kathy) Shak of Braddock and Lori Shak of North Huntingdon. Patty was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary (Spara) Shak. She is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Patty was a 1967 graduate of St. Thomas High school in Braddock. In her early work years, Patty was employed at the University of Pittsburgh's Hillman Library. She left her job to pursue her career as a home maker for Walt, Brian and Erik. She also found time to volunteer at the Penn Hills Senior Center. Pat enjoyed baking, candy making and all types of baseball. But her fondest joy was any time spent with her family. ROSEMARIE "ROSE" MANTIA Rosemarie “Rose” Mantia, 103, died on April 5, 2020, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. Rose was born in 1916, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Agostino and Anna (Lombardo) Mantia. Following her graduation from Allegheny High School, Rose became a seamstress and assisted with her father's produce business at the North Side Market House in Pittsburgh. Prior to moving to an assisted living apartment at St. Barnabas in 2019, Rose lived most of her life in Bellevue, where she dedicated herself to volunteer work. In 1970, Rose joined the Women's Auxiliary for Bellevue Suburban Hospital (now Allegheny General Hospital, Suburban Campus) where she volunteered several days a week and also managed the “New to You” resale shop to raise funds for the work of the Auxiliary. Rose continued her volunteer service to the hospital and the Auxiliary well into her late nineties, earning a Certificate of Recognition in 2013 from the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital for her 88,168 hours of service. In 2006, on Rose's ninetieth birthday, the Pennsylvania Senate recognized Rose for 36 years of volunteer work, proclaiming “Ms. Mantia is an outstanding citizen who exemplifies the finest values of American life and has earned the respect of her family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances.” Rose enjoyed spending social time with her friends in the Auxiliary, sewing, ceramics, traveling and spending time with her niece and nephew, their families and dogs. Rose is known by all for her big heart, hard work, willingness to help others, and always cheerful disposition. Rose was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Anthony in 1996; and sister-in-law, Nancy Mantia in 2006. Rose is survived by her niece, Karla (Dan) Craven; and nephew, Michael (Lisa Canaan) Mantia; great-nieces, Eryn (Matt) Schappa, Hannah Craven, Mia (Jay Lowery) Craven, Sophie Craven, and Megan Mantia; great-nephews, Sam (Rachel) Craven and Nicholas Mantia; great-great-nieces, Charlotte Schappa and Audrina Lowery; and great-great-nephew, Jack Schappa. ALBINA (LUSETICH) SCROCK Of Forest Hills, age 103, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Albina was born on December 8, 1916, in East Pittsburgh, daughter of Sam and Anna (Clarich) Lusetich. Beloved wife of the late Stephen H. Scrock for 71 years. Loving mother of Mark (Dorothy) Scrock of Knoxville, TN, Karen Scrock of Bethesda, MD and Marcia Scrock of Wilkinsburg. Treasured grandmother of Mark Scrock of OH, Karen (Tracy) Latham of TN, David (Danielle) Shibuya of NJ and Steven Shibuya of San Francisco. Proud great-grandmother of Abby and Ben Scrock; Emily, Alex and Cole Latham; and Hannah Shibuya. Albina is also survived by her devoted cousin, Dr. David Skrak; her precious nieces, Anna Marie, Dee and Ginger; her Best Friend, Donna McKinley; her Soul Sister, Sharon Tillman; her Guardian Angel, Mimi Sirmons; and also nieces, nephews and cousins of the Scrock Family. Albina assisted her husband, Steve, in the administration of his excavation business. They became original members of St. Maurice Parish in 1949. Albina also volunteered for years at the former Forbes Nursing Home on Washington Blvd. She and Steve were square dance enthusiasts and were members of the Footloose Square Dancers, as well as other groups. Last September, Albina was presented a special plaque at the Forest Hills Centennial celebration as a Centenarian of Forest Hills. It is a gift that she cherished and prized. THOMAS L. SHERAN, JR. On Saturday, April 4, 2020, Thomas Sheran, Jr., age 56, lost his life suddenly in a tragic motorcycle accident. Tom always wore a smile and had kind words for all he met. He was a devoted husband and passionate about his family, his work, his motorcycle, the Steelers, and Deer Valley YMCA, and was game for anything outdoors, whether scuba diving, disc golf, or hiking trails. He enjoyed music, countless concerts and the North Hills Marching Band. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer, and his four cherished children, Tristan, Jordan, Aurora and Logan; his father, Thomas, Sr. and stepmother, Pat; and his mother-in-law, Jackie Graham (Rich). He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Clunan. He will be deeply missed by all the aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews of the Buterbaugh, Sheran, and Fuller families, wherein Tom was a vital member. Tom had many childhood and biker friends, and co-workers who also treasured his friendship. Given the current circumstances regarding social distancing, a drive by tribute with Tom's family will be held Wednesday and Thursday, 2 until 6 p.m. in the parking lot across from St. John's Lutheran Church, 920 Perry Hwy. ALBERT KEITH SZIRMAE Age 66, of White Oak, passed into Glory on April 4, 2020, at UPMC McKeesport. Born December 29, 1953, in Fort Knox, KY. He was the husband of Jayne Claire (Spate) Szirmae and the son of the late Joseph Henry and Dolores (Berta) Szirmae. Keith recently retired from Amore Management Co., where he was the head groundskeeper. He was a member of the former Hope United Methodist Church and a proud member of the McKeesport United Methodist Shared Ministries. He was the Choir Director at First United Methodist Church and was also active with the Christy Park United Methodist Church Children's Ministries. Keith enjoyed spreading the word of God through his music and played with local religious band Chalice. He had a great love for the outdoors and gardening. It wouldn't be unusual to see him skateboarding down the front street or kicking his soccer ball in the front yard, or even cycling on the trail. Keith loved his family, loved life, and lived it to the fullest. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his sons, Nicholas (Savannah Keibler), Sandor (Megan Skiba), and Jacob (Erin) all of McKeesport; sisters, Regina Honse of Sheffield Lake, OH, and Judy (Chet) Berg of Elizabeth; brothers, Jon (Sue) Spate of Belle Vernon, and Jim (Cindy) Spate of White Oak; also cousins, nieces and nephews. ANNA J. (GILARSKI) SZWARC Of Braddock, age 94, passed away peacefully at Providence Point in Scott Township on Saturday, April 4, 2020 with her family at her side. Previously she was a resident of The Willows in Kennedy Township. Born and raised in Braddock, Anna was a devout member of the Sacred Heart Church. After graduating from Braddock High School she worked at Westinghouse and Wonday films until she met the love of her life, Joseph “Red” Szwarc. They married in 1950 and had four daughters. She was extremely active in the church and was a Rosary Mother. She volunteered with her children's school events and was a member of the Polish National Alliance. Anna served holiday meals to the guys at the Polish Club and enjoyed volunteering at Braddock Hospital. She also loved to play bingo, but her favorite time was spent with her grandchildren. Loving mother of Kathleen Szwarc, Joanne (Jeff) Naugle, Andrea Szwarc (Mark Alfred) and Ann Marie “Mimi” (Joseph) O'Donnell. Cherished grandmother of Marissa and Justin Naugle and Joseph O'Donnell. Anna leaves behind her sisters, Theresa Kobylanski and Josephine Pallotta; along with many nieces and nephews. (BLAUCH) CLARK Of Peters Twp., formerly of Bethel Park, age 59, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved wife of 27 years to Jerry Clark; loving mother of Alex and A.J. Clark; daughter of David and Jean Blauch; sister of Scott Blauch, survived and loved by too many family and friends to name. Sue was actively involved at John McMillan Presbyterian Church and in her children's musical and sports programs, as well serving as President of Peters Twp. PTA. MARTIN VALKO, JR. Of Braddock Hills, age 95, on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Martin was born in Braddock on October 11, 1924, a son of the late Martin Valko, Sr. and Anna (Macuga) Valko. Beloved husband of 60 years to the late Anna (Paich) Valko. Loving father of Martina “Tina” Antolik and her husband, Mark; and Martin “Mark” Valko and his wife, Janine. Treasured grandfather of Stephanie (Scott) Park, Jason (Casey) Antolik, Scott Valko and Alexis Valko. Proud great-grandfather of Cody Pawlowski, Colton Park, Cheyenne Park and Jaycie Antolik. Dearest uncle of the late Carol Larkin. Martin will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Martin was a WWII Army veteran and a retired welder from E.L. Weigand, Co. He loved to tell his stories about Braddock, growing up there with his friends and enjoying the shore of the Monongahela River. He also shared stories of his Army experiences as a soldier during WWII. Martin enjoyed tinkering with electronics, gardening and playing the slots at the casino. DORIS COHEN On Wednesday April 8, 2020, age 97, beloved wife of the late Bill (“Velvel”) Cohen and special companion of the late Boris Kentor. A vibrant, generous, strong and fiercely loyal matriarch of her family. “Gigi” enjoyed cooking and baking but derived the most pleasure from her family. Gigi is survived by her loving daughter, Harriet Waters (William Waters) of Baton Rouge, LA; her doting grandsons, Matthew Cohen (Leslie Cohen) of Hollywood, FL, Howard Cohen (Nancy Cohen) of Weston, FL, Richard Cohen of Hollywood, FL (former spouse, Jeanne Cohen of Batavia, NY), Phillip Cohen (Jennifer Cohen) of Manlius, NY and Jason Waters (Adria Waters) of Columbia, MO; and her devoted granddaughter, Janice Shapiro (Steven Shapiro) of Pittsburgh, PA and dear granddaughter Jocelyn Whitesides (Kevin Whitesides) of Columbia, MO. Gigi is also survived by the true joys of her life, her many great grandchildren, Spencer Cohen, Brett Cohen, Samantha Cohen, Elizabeth Cohen, Hannah Shapiro, Tyler Shapiro, Alexis Cohen, Paul Cohen, Elise Cohen, Iliana Cohen, Finn Cohen, Devin Whitesides, Andrew Whitesides, Anthony Whitesides and Nathan Waters. Gigi was proudly a career woman most of her adult life, working into her late 70's. She additionally took much pride in the time she and her husband spent in Baltimore working for the war effort during World War II. Gigi spent the last 12 years in Pittsburgh, enjoying her surrounding Jewish community. A special thank you to Weinberg Terrace for the 12 wonderful years they provided to her. An even greater thank you to her past personal caregivers, LaShawn Wilkerson and Vernetta Howard. A final very special thank you to Cartazhia Perry (and her mother, Linda and sister, Cadazhia) and Linda Rutherford, whose efforts, love and attention made Gigi's last few years incredibly special and meaningful. AHRC has since housed Gilda, assisted with employment for Gilda and has provided both physical and emotional support to Gilda for decades, at no cost. Through the years, Doris ensured Gilda's well-being with continued visits, donations and direct contact with Gilda's social worker. JAMES FRANCIS MULLOOLY, JR. 1946-2020 Jim was born in Noblestown, PA and graduated from South Fayette High School in 1964. He attended Haverford College as a National Merit Scholar. As a French Literature major, he went on to teach French at Avella High School and Linsly Academy in Wheeling, WV. Jim became a drug and alcohol counselor and worked for years in the tri-state region. He most recently was employed at the Greenbriar Treatment Center in Washington, PA. Jim suffered a severe accident when walking his dog on March 30. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, his willingness to help others, and his sense of humor. Appreciating the joys of nature, we will miss his Facebook pictures of trees, flowers, sunsets, and his best friend, Jewels, his dog. Jim is survived by his sister, Becky Denova (Jim); his brother, Chuk Mullooly (Joan), Chelsea Norman (Robbie), and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral arrangements are private. THELMA EVANS COX KING "TEE JAY" GREENVILLE, DE. - Thelma “Tee Jay” Evans Cox King, 89, of Wilmington, DE, died at 8:23 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, in her home at Country House (Acts Retirement Community). Born May 7, 1930, in Carnegie, PA, she was the youngest of four children of the late Thomas ‘Tibby' B. Evans and Irma Faller Evans. Tee Jay proudly attended Denison University and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English in 1951. Having obtained her teaching certificate, she taught English in Bel Air, MD, while her then husband John Jay ‘Jack' Cox, Jr. was posted at Aberdeen Proving Grounds during the Korean War. They then moved to Wilmington, DE and proudly and lovingly adopted two children through the Children's Bureau, now Children & Families First, DE. Tee Jay loved fashion and interior design becoming a principle partner of Plain & Fancy Interiors in Centreville, DE and starting her own interior design business, Tee Jay Cox, Interiors. She joined Doncaster as a fashion consultant in the mid ‘80s and retired ten years later. She married Stanley King in 1998 and was with him until his passing in 2012. She was a devoted member and avid volunteer and supporter of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1967. Community volunteer interests included Brandywine Creek State Park, Hagley Museum, and Winterthur among others. Throughout the years she loved tennis and walking, playing bridge, and flowers of all kinds. She loved animals, especially dogs. She had a passion for history and travel and loved discussing different places and cultures. Summer retreats to Sherwood Forest, MD were near and dear to her heart, providing fond memories of her time with family and friends on the Severn River blue. She is survived by her son, John ‘Jay' Cox, III, DVM and his wife, Paula (DVM) of Jerome, ID; her daughter, Tamara C. DeFer and her husband, Darin, of Wilmington, DE; two grandchildren, Blair Alexander Cox and Ashley Evans Cox; her eldest sibling, Janice Evans Stoner of Austin, TX; seven nephews and one niece; Tom Stoner of Austin, TX; Cdr. Mike Evans, USN Retired of Norfolk, VA; David Uffelman of Annapolis, MD; Sara Ann Uffelman of Celebration, FL; Geoff Stoner (wife, Kathi) of Austin, TX; Jim Stoner of Austin, TX; Scott Uffelman (wife, Jane) of Pasadena, CA; and Jon Uffelman (wife, Amanda) of Bloomfield Village, MI; and many great-nieces and nephews that she loved dearly as well. She was preceded in death by her brother, Cdr. Tom Evans, III USN Retired (wife, Dottie) and her beloved sister, Ruth Evans Uffelman. She would want us to thank the staff and volunteers at Country House, Hospice and Home Instead for all they did and the grace they displayed. There will be a memorial service at a future date to be determined. Tee Jay loved reading and wished to instill the importance of this in others. REGINA SHIRLEY (KUSNER) KOMS Age 85, joined the Lord peacefully in her sleep, on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Born October 25, 1934, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Sophia (Aftanas) Kusner. She was the wife of Ronald L. Koms, Sr. for 64 years. In addition to her husband, she was the mother of Renee (Dale) Pritchard and Ronald L. Koms, Jr. (Teri). Sister of Justine Kusner. Grandmother of Kristi Goehring, Kelli Dalesandro, Mike McElhaney and Jamie Orlovsky; nine great-grandchildren. Her name was Regina, but everyone knew her as Shirley. She enjoyed playing golf, and spending time with her family. We want to thank all the wonderful people at Clepper Manor who took great care of her. NANCY L. (HAMILTON) CHAPLA Age 83, of Monroeville, formerly of Plum and Greenfield, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, April 6, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Eugene F. Chapla, Sr. Loving mother of Anne Venetti, Susan (Nick) Tomasic, Eugene Chapla, Jr., Christine Chapla and William (Nikki) Chapla.
